Investigators Probe Va. Light Rail Costs

December 14, 2010

State investigators say Hampton Roads Transit leaders hid the true cost of building light rail from government entities funding the project.

A report released by the Virginia Department of Transportation Inspector General says senior officials with the transit agency kept a separate, internal accounting of light rail costs. That information was intentionally hidden from external stakeholders.

The report also says the agency disregarded procurement rules.

New HRT President and CEO Philip Shucet called for the investigation. He told the newspaper that the agency will correct all deficiencies cited by investigators.
