RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A federal judge is denying a request by former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell's defense team to limit prosecutors' involvement in a civil case against the government's key witness.
Judge James R. Spencer ruled in court Tuesday against the McDonnells' legal team.
Prosecutors had previously requested and received a delay in a civil case involving Jonnie Williams, the former Star Scientific CEO who gave more than $165,000 in gifts and loans to McDonnell and his wife, Maureen.
The McDonnells have been charged with improperly helping Star Scientific in exchange for the gifts and loans.
Lawyers for the former governor argued unsuccessfully that the prosecutors' request for a delay interfered with the defense team's ability to collect evidence. Williams is being sued by investors who claim he falsely promoted Star Scientific's products.
