RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Justice Department has approved grants totaling $3.2 million to fund law enforcement jobs and expand community policing.

U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine say the funding is designed to promote school safety.

The funding includes $1.9 million to support five officers in Arlington County and 10 in Newport News. The money is intended to rehire officers or hire new police officers.

Two Virginia organizations were also awarded $1.4 million for campus safety initiatives and community policing. The recipients are the VTV Family Outreach Foundation and the Virginia Community Policing Institute.

The funds are used to advance community policing through training and technical assistance, among other means.
