Smallmouth on Rebound in Va.'s Shenandoah River

May 5, 2013

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) - Smallmouth bass in the Shenandoah River and its tributaries are on the rebound after years of fish kills.

The concern about fish populations began in 2004 when an increasing numbers of dead fish were found lining the bottom of the North Fork of the Shenandoah. The next year, fish kills were reported on the South Fork

According to the Daily News Record, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries reports that the number of adult smallmouth bass is far above the 17-year average in the South Fork of the Shenandoah.

Biologists also found an increase in the number of larger smallmouth bass in 2012.

Moreover, the forecast also shows that fishing in the North Fork should be strong because of spawning success.
