UPDATE: Police have identified the Liberty University student who was shot dead by a LU emergency services officer as 19 year-old Joshua Hathaway of Lubbock, TX.
Lynchburg police say a Liberty University student is dead following an altercation with a Liberty University emergency services officer Tuesday morning.
School officials say the officer was attacked by a male student in the lobby of an off-campus residence hall, LU Women’s Annex II. That residence hall is a women-only facility.
The student was shot and killed. The officer was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment.
Students living in the dorm were allowed to come and go Tuesday morning while police investigated. They did not receive any official notification about the incident.
"This appears to be an isolated incident, and there is not any ongoing concern for the safety of students or the community,” Lt. David Gearhart of the Lynchburg Police Dept. said. “We are not currently seeking any suspect in relation to this incident."
Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Junior, released a statement about the incident saying, "the Liberty University community is deeply saddened by this tragic event, and is prayerfully supporting all those impacted."
