The government is forecasting lower yields for some Virginia crops this year.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the state's winter wheat yield is forecast at 65 bushels per acre compared to 71 bushels a year ago. Production is expected to approach 17.6 million bushels, which is down 1 percent.
That reflects acreage of 270,000, up 20,000 acres from 2011.
The picture isn't as strong for corn, either, with predicted overall production of 31.9 million bushels, down 21 percent from last year.
Soybean production is expected to be down 14 percent, while peanut production is forecast to increase 9 percent.
