Lynchburg Repairs Monument Felled by Vehicle

September 16, 2012

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - A Lynchburg monument honoring Confederate General Jubal Early has returned to its spot after a nearly yearlong absence.

The city took down the 10-ton obelisk last year after a vehicle hit it and cracked its base.

The damage has been repaired and city officials have taken steps to protect the monument from wayward vehicles.

The News and Advance (http://bit.ly/PpoInp ) says the city obtained permission from a neighboring landowner to move the obelisk back about 20 feet. That will provide a larger buffer from passing traffic.

City officials also plan to add protective bollards to the monument's periphery.
