Man Accused of Killing Va. Student Pleads Not Guilty

October 13, 2010

One of two men charged in the killing of a Seton Hall University student at an off-campus party has pleaded not guilty to murder and weapons charges.

Marcus Bascus was arrested in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania several days after the shooting in East Orange.

Prosecutors say Bascus provided the gun used by fellow defendant Nicholas Welch, who allegedly opened fire at random after being denied entry to a party in a privately owned home September 25.

Jessica Moore, a sophomore from Disputanta, Virginia was shot and died later that day.

Bascus' lawyer, Clifford Lazzaro, entered the plea for him Wednesday in state Superior Court. Lazzaro told "The Star-Ledger" of Newark afterward that his client had "no role" in the shooting.

Both defendants are being held on $2 million bail.
