A Virginia man is facing first-degree murder and attempted murder charges stemming from a shooting in a parking lot at a veterans hospital in Richmond.
Federal prosecutors say 55-year-old Cornelius Hayes of Blackstone was charged on Monday in a five-count indictment, which also included several firearms charges.
Authorities say James Lee died at the hospital following the Feb. 22 shooting at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veteran's Affairs Medical Center.
According to the indictment, Hayes used a firearm to kill Lee and attempted to kill another person on hospital grounds. Court documents allege that Hayes was arrested by State Police in Chesterfield County not long after the shooting and officers found a revolver in Hayes' lap.
If convicted of murder, Hayes is eligible for the death penalty or life in prison.
