Man Gets 14 Months for Threats Made to Rep. Cantor

April 10, 2012

An East Tennessee man has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for threatening U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia and his family.

The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/HZtKjP ) reported U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Varlan sentenced 63-year-old Glendon Llewellyn Swift of Lenoir City on Tuesday.

The FBI said in an affidavit that Swift left two messages at Cantor's suburban Richmond, Va., office the evening of Oct. 27, 2011, threatening to "destroy" the congressman, rape his daughter and kill his wife.

Swift's lawyer told the judge his client was drunk and grieving the death of his wife when the calls were made.

When the FBI came to Swift's home days later, he admitted making the calls.

Varlan ordered Swift to undergo alcohol abuse and mental health treatment.
