Man Pleads Guilty to Assault in JMU Springfest Riot

February 23, 2011

A Vienna man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer during a riot at a block party near the James Madison University campus.

Twenty-one-year-old Peter Morgner entered his plea Tuesday in Rockingham County Circuit Court as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. He originally was charged with seven felonies stemming from the 2010 riot during Springfest.

Judge T.J. Wilson sentenced Morgner to one year in prison and then suspended six months. With time served while awaiting trial, Morgner was released Tuesday.

Morgner was accused of throwing glass bottles and a flaming piece of wood into a group of people, including police.

Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, estimated at about 8,000 people.
