Man Pleads Guilty to Hiding Infant's Body in Parking Garage

April 4, 2012

A man faces up to five years in prison for hiding an infant's body in a parking garage in Virginia Beach.

WAVY-TV reports that Lawrence Ray Smith Jr. pleaded guilty Tuesday in a Virginia Beach court to concealing the body of Janyiha Whiteman's body.

Police say the mother left the girl in Smith's care after she was jailed for a parole violation. Relatives reported the child missing on Oct. 6, 2011. Her body was found in an Oceanfront garage on Oct. 21, 2011.

Last month, prosecutors dropped a felony child neglect charge against Smith, citing a lack of evidence.

The cause of the baby's death wasn't determined. Smith's sentencing is set for June 27.
