McDonnell Outlines K-12 Priorities with Board of Education

September 22, 2011

Gov. Bob McDonnell says that improving public education will be a priority in the upcoming legislative session, but warns that funding for K-12 initiatives in the will continue to be tight.

McDonnell addressed the state Board of Education on Thursday at its business meeting in Richmond, and outlined what he views as the state's priorities for its public schools.

He asked the board to ensure schools continue to raise the rigor of coursework and hold students to higher standards. He also wants schools to stress the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses to ensure students get a solid foundation for jobs in high-demand fields.

McDonnell also said the board should continue to examine pilot teacher merit-pay programs to see if such a plan can apply statewide.
