McDonnell Wants to Delay Tolls for Tunnel Project

April 16, 2012

Gov. Bob McDonnell wants to delay collecting tolls for the Midtown Tunnel project until January 2014. The new tolls are to begin in late summer.

McDonnell said Monday that he has asked the Commonwealth Transportation Board to provide up to $100 million for the project so the tolls can be delayed. The request will be submitted to the board at its Wednesday meeting.

The $2.1 billion project includes a new tunnel connecting Norfolk and Portsmouth and rehabilitating the existing Midtown and Downtown tunnels. Revenue from the tolls will help pay for the work.

The project is a public-private partnership between the Virginia Department of Transportation and Elizabeth River Crossings LLC. McDonnell says they have closed on the deal and construction will begin in the fall.
