A memorial service has been scheduled at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts for Lieutenant Colonel Morris "Moose" Fontenot Jr.
The memorial service for Lt. Col. Fontenot is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, September 7, in the main base hangar.
"During this memorial service, members of the 104th Fighter Wing will be able to pay their respects to Lt. Col. Fontenot and to celebrate his life of service,” said Col. James Keefe, 104th Fighter Wing Commander. “This tragedy hit the wing very hard, and this memorial service is important for the Barnes family to find closure after this accident.”
The service will be open to military members and their families, as well as invited guests.
Fontenot was killed after the F-15C Eagle aircraft he was piloting crashed in a remote part of Augusta County on August 27th.
There is evidence that he did not eject from the plane.
Fontenot's interment at the Air Force Academy will be in early October.
He was a decorated combat veteran, earning the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, and Combat Readiness Medal among others.
In lieu of flowers and cards, and at the family’s request, a fund has been established to assist the family in the loss of Lt. Col. Fontenot, and donations can be made through the Red River Valley Fighter Pilot Assoc.
