Missing Boater Search in Va. Now a Recovery Effort

February 8, 2011

The Virginia Marine Police says a search for a missing Australian boater has moved from a rescue effort to recovering the man's body.

Marine police spokesman John Bull told The Virginian-Pilot that authorities didn't find any sign of 64-year-old Arno Dawson of Perth, Australia after four days of searching.

The search began Thursday after a crew member on a fishing vessel saw Dawson's sailboat cruising unattended in the Chesapeake Bay. Bull says Dawson bought the 40-foot sailboat in Annapolis, Md., and was sailing home alone. Foul play isn't suspected.

Searchers are now dredging between the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
