The woman convicted of killing her 2-month-old daughter will go to prison for 28 years.
Ashkea Johnson, 19, was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder for smothering her daughter, Rosaleeia, with a plastic diaper bag in 2009. She received 25 years for the former and three years for the latter.
Staunton's Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Anne Reed said she was pleased with the sentencing.
“I certainly think the judge gave a lot of consideration to the sentencing in this case with the circumstances. I think it's a tragic case from beginning to end,” she said.
Johnson had to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before sentencing and that is why it took two years to sentence her.
