More than 9,600 still without power in SW Va.

December 17, 2010

More than 9,600 Appalachian Power customers in southwest Virginia remain without electricity in the aftermath of a winter storm.

The utility says most of the outages are in Smyth and Washington counties. Electricity is expected to be restored to most customers by Saturday night.

The storm dropped several inches of snow in parts of Virginia on Thursday and made driving treacherous.

Virginia State Police say troopers responded to 1,947 traffic accidents across the state Thursday. Most involved only property damage.
