The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Petersburg, damaging homes, trees and power lines.
Weather service officials say five people suffered minor injuries, including cuts and bruises, in Friday's tornado.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the weather service determined that a tornado with gusts between 80-85 mph was on the ground for about 3 miles after touching down near Fort Hayes Common. It went through the Battlefield Park, Oakhurst and East Walnut Hill neighborhoods before crossing Interstate 95 and on to the Petersburg National Battlefield.
The East Walnut Hill and Oakhurst neighborhoods sustained the most damage.
