Nearly 40,000 Chickens Killed in Va. Barn Fire

October 14, 2010

A fire moved quickly through a Rockingham County poultry house early Thursday morning, killing nearly 40,000 one-week-old chickens.

Fire crews were called to the 500 block of Mayland Road, in Broadway, just before 1am Thursday morning. The owner says he was in bed when he got a call from his alarm company.

The chickens were being grown for Pilgrims Pride.

Firefighters say it took about an hour to get the fire under control. Their main priority was keeping the fire in one place, preventing it from spreading.

More than 30 firefighters and 7 departments were called to the scene. Fire officials say the fire started near a stove on the second floor of the barn.

Crews say the investigation is ongoing.
