The new operators of the State Fair of Virginia are promising a family-friendly, agriculture-centered exposition.

Leaders of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation and Universal Fairs LLC appeared publicly Thursday for the first time since they announced their partnership to run the Caroline County fair.

Farm Bureau President Wayne Pryor says he couldn't think of a better place to put the state's agriculture industry on display, while Universal President Mark Lovell promised to deliver what he called a clean, safe and family-friendly fair.

Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd P. Haymore called the marriage of agriculture and tourism an "economic powerhouse."

Universal purchased the property in May for $5.67 million from the debt-ridden former operator of the 150-year-old fair.

The fair is scheduled to run from Sept. 28 through Oct. 7.
