Newborn Left in Bag in Va. Church Parking Lot

November 15, 2010

Fairfax County Police say a newborn baby girl has been found inside a duffel bag in the parking lot of a Springfield church.

The newborn was found around 6:30 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Saint Raymond of Penafort Roman Catholic Church on Pohick Road and taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Police say the infant was likely only left alone for a few minutes and is in good condition.

Police are trying to figure out what happened and want to find the mother because they are concerned for her health.

Virginia law allows parents to leave a child younger than 14 days old at a hospital or rescue squad "in a manner reasonably calculated to ensure the child's safety." But police note that in this case the baby was left unattended outside.
