No Charges for Va. Officer Involved in Shooting

November 11, 2010

Fairfax County police and prosecutors say the officer who shot a man who led officers on a chase last week will not be charged.

Police also took the unusual step of identifying the officer. He is Paul Cable, a two-year veteran of the department.

Police spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings says Fairfax police are modifying their policy on releasing the names of officers involved in shootings. She says Chief David Rohrer will consider releasing an officer's name on a case-by-case issue.

Other jurisdictions generally release the names of officers involved in shootings.

The man who was shot, 50-year-old Joseph Michel, is now facing additional charges, including felonious assault on a police officer. Police say Michel tried to run down Cable with a car, and the officer opened fire.
