April 7, 2013

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Postal Service's mail processing operation in Norfolk will be closed this summer.

Media outlets report that the work will be moved to the Postal Service's facility in Sandston in Henrico County. The Norfolk facility's closure will affect 483 workers.

Postal Service spokeswoman Michele Martel says some workers could be reassigned to other mail facilities in the Norfolk area. Others could transfer into other jobs or move to the Sandston facility. Some are expected to retired.

Martel says the closure of the Norfolk facility will occur in phases.

The Postal Service lost $1.3 billion in the final three months of 2012. The loss followed a nearly $16 billion loss the previous fiscal year.
