Pastor at Historic Va. Church Faces Sex Charges

March 15, 2012

A pastor at one of the oldest black churches in the South is facing charges that he tried to arrange sex with a minor.

Media outlets report that 50-year-old Curtis Glendell Mathews of Springfield Baptist Church in Petersburg was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of using a communication device to facilitate sex with a minor. Springfield Baptist Church was organized in 1867 and is considered a historic black church.

Petersburg police said Mathews was arrested at his home. He is being held without bond at Riverside Regional Jail. It was not immediately clear if he had hired or been appointed an attorney.

Police did not release details of the allegations, but said a guardian of the teen notified police of the contact.
