Police say no one was injured when a malfunction forced a small plane owned by Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell to land on its underside at the Blue Ridge Regional Airport.

Speedway spokesman Mike Smith tells the Martinsville Bulletin that the plane's landing gear malfunctioned as it was landing early Sunday morning. The plane skidded and stopped in the grass at the end of the runway.

Smith says Campbell was returning from a race at Columbus Motor Speedway in Columbus, Ohio. Campbell is a pilot but Smith says he wasn't flying the plane.

State Police Sgt. J. M. Phillippi says six other people were on the plane.

Phillipi says the undercarriage, wings and propellers were damaged but the plane is intact.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the accident.
