A new research project at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest retreat is expected to offer insight into how the Wing of Offices was used.
The project began Monday at the historic Bedford County retreat. It includes analyzing materials excavated in the late 1980s and early 1990s and creating a catalogue of the artifacts.
Archaeology and landscapes director Jack Gary tells The News and Advance (http://bit.ly/Q9YnY9 ) that the research will help the staff understand what it was like to live and work in the wing.
The findings will be available to the public through online social networking sites and blogs. Exhibits also are planned.
The wing was built by Jefferson in 1813. After his death, the wing was removed in the mid-1800s was reconfigured into two separate outbuildings.
