Prosecutor: Va. Police Shooting Justified

November 4, 2010

A prosecutor says two Norfolk police officers acted appropriately when they fired on a suspect during a pursuit.

Commonwealth's attorney Gregory D. Underwood says in a letter delivered to Police Chief Bruce Marquis that prosecutors won't pursue charges against the officers.

Police had said 18-year-old Jamar Hassell ran from officers after they attempted to pull over a vehicle he was driving on July 11.

Underwood says Hassell refused repeated instructions to drop a handgun. Hassell turned his upper body toward the officers with the gun in his hand and was shot at least once. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
