Publisher to Correct Textbook Civil War Reference

October 26, 2010

The publisher of a Virginia textbook says it plans to correct a passage that falsely claims that thousands of black troops fought for the Confederacy.

Five Ponds Press says it will begin printing revised editions of the fourth-grade textbook early next year.

The new versions of "Our Virginia" will correct a sentence that inaccurately claims that black troops fought under Stonewall Jackson, an assertion historians overwhelmingly say is unproven. It also will replace a photo of a brown bear that is not native to Virginia.

The incorrect version of the textbook is being used in Charlottesville City Schools but not in Albemarle County Public Schools.

Until the new version is printed, the "Daily Press" reports that the publisher is offering blank white stickers to cover the inaccurate sentence.
