ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Roanoke Sheriff Octavia Johnson is the Republican nominee to fill Democrat Onzlee Ware's seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Media outlets report that another Republican who planned to seek the nomination, Caleb Coulter, didn't file the proper paperwork.
Democrats will hold a primary on Saturday to select their nominee.
The special election will be held Jan. 7.
Ware said earlier this month that he will resign to spend more time with his ailing mother.
