Sailor in race in Va knocked overboard, dies
GLOUCESTER, Va. (AP) - The Coast Guard says a sailor in the annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race was killed after a boom on the vessel knocked the person overboard.
Officials say the Coast Guard responded to a call shortly before 7 p.m. Friday off Windmill Point, near Gloucester.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that crew on the Cuchulain had pulled the injured crew member from the water and were performing CPR. He was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester.
The Cuchulain is a 50-foot schooner homeported in Pasadena, Md.
According to the race's website, the event has more than 30 vessels racing down the Chesapeake Bay from Annapolis, Md., to north of Hampton Roads.
