COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (AP) - A Southside Virginia musical group is calling it quits after performing for 28 years.

The Southernaires sang at civic organizations, care facilities and churches throughout the region.

Long-time director Marie Cheeley tells The Progress-Index that the Southernaires members have become too old to continue. She says the group couldn't get new singers.

Cheeley estimates that the group traveled thousands of miles and gave more than 700 performances.
