The Virginia State Police has identified a motorist who was struck and killed by a car as he was retrieving furniture that fell off his pickup truck.
State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says 53-year-old Alfred C. Perutelli III, of Gladstone, died at a local hospital after the crash occurred Wednesday afternoon on Route 29 outside Lynchburg.
Trooper D.T. Wilson pulled over to help Perutelli in southbound lanes of Route 29, just south of Galts Mill Road. Wilson stopped his vehicle in the right, southbound lane to keep cars from crashing into the furniture.
Geller says the trooper and pickup truck driver were standing near a piece of furniture in the roadway when a car traveling southbound on Route 29 lost control and hit them both.
Wilson suffered serious injuries. The driver of the car wasn't injured.
Investigators say Wilson's patrol car did have its emergency lights on. The crash remains under investigation.
