LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) - Virginia Military Institute says operations are returning to normal after authorities detonated a suspicious package.
The school says the package didn't contain any explosives, and no one was injured. Officials did not give a detailed description of the object.
The item was found Wednesday morning near the entrance to Preston Library on VMI's Lexington campus. The library and portions of Nichols Engineering Building and Mallory Hall were evacuated.
VMI spokesman Stewart MacInnis says cadets were alerted by e-mail, text messages and announcements over a public address system in the barracks, following a protocol that was refined after the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings.
The school says the "all clear" was sounded at 11:13 a.m.
