Tolls Would Afflict Poor, Rural Southside Region

December 16, 2012

STONY CREEK, Va. (AP) - Gov. Bob McDonnell has poked a hornet's nest in proposing tolls on Interstate 95 at the North Carolina border to help pay for highway upkeep.

In a quest for more state money for transportation without raising taxes on fuel, the Republican governor is planning tolls for Interstate 95. For through travelers, that would amount to $4 near the border, then $2 to exit and $2 to re-enter the highway afterward.

While locals could get discounted plans, people in places like Stony Creek say the state singled out one of the state's poorest, most rural areas.

Locals say it would kill businesses along I-95 like Stony Creek's Tastee Hut. Counting tolls, Mayor Frank Jackson says that motorists would spend $11 for a $3 Tastee Hut hamburger.
