A Nov. 6 trial has been set for a Blackstone man charged with killing a man at a Richmond veterans hospital.
U.S. District Judge James Spencer scheduled the four-day jury trial for Cornelius Hayes during a brief hearing Thursday. The 55-year-old Hayes has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, attempted murder and three firearms counts. Earlier this month, the government filed a notice that it doesn't intend to seek the death penalty.
An indictment charges that Hayes fatally shot James Lee in the parking lot of the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Feb. 22. He's also accused of attempting to kill another person on hospital grounds.
Court documents say state troopers found a revolver in Hayes' lap when they arrested him shortly after the shooting.
