Two Va. School Divisions Face U.S. Reviews

November 20, 2010

The U.S. Department of Education is investigating the Henrico County and Lynchburg school divisions for possible civil-rights violations.

Agency spokesman Jim Bradshaw says the department's Office for
Civil Rights is seeking to determine whether the suburban Richmond
school district fails to provide African-American students with the
same resources and educational opportunities that it provides white
students in order to prepare them for post-secondary education and
careers.

Bradshaw says the compliance review wasn't prompted by a
complaint. He says the Lynchburg review is similar, and the two are
the only such investigations in Virginia.

He told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that there is no timetable
for the reviews.
