CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - An assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia is being honored with an early career development award from the National Science Foundation.

The Charlottesville university says Cameron Mura is being given $728,000 to investigate a specific type of protein and the role it plays in the functioning of cells.

The particular proteins he's studying have been linked to cancer and help regulate cell-to-cell communication networks.

Officials say the prestigious five-year award supports junior faculty who perform outstanding research, are excellent educators and integrate education and research in their work.

Mura started at U.Va. in 2008. He earned his doctorate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of California-Los Angeles.
