CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A University of Virginia graduate's private foundation is giving $10 million to the school to support its new Data Science Institute.

Jaffray Woodriff's Quantitative Foundation will provide the funding in increments over the next six years.

The donation will establish an endowment to support the institute. The university says in a news release that it will provide $7 million over the same period to supplement the endowment.

Woodriff is a 1991 graduate of U.Va.'s McIntire School of Commerce.

The Data Science Institute will offer instruction and conduct research across computation, science, law, engineering, mathematics, statistics, commerce, social science, humanities and other disciplines.
