Utility Seeks Base Rate Increase for Va. Customers

February 10, 2011

Virginia Natural Gas is seeking a rate hike that would increase residential customers' monthly bills by $6.27 beginning August 1.

The Daily Press reports that the utility requested the base rate increase Tuesday in a filing with the Virginia State Corporation Commission.

Residential customers' average monthly bills would increase from $65.24 to $71.51.

The rate hike would generate $25.1 million in revenue annually. The utility says it needs the additional revenue to recover the cost of building an underwater pipeline and to pay maintenance and other operating expenses.

Virginia Natural Gas serves about 271,000 customers.
