The Virginia Department of Transportation has proposed a $4 toll for passenger vehicles on Interstate 95 in Sussex County.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that large trucks using the toll plaza just north of the North Carolina border would pay $12.
Tolls would be collected on vehicles traveling both directions. The proposal requires federal approval.
VDOT says the estimated $35 million to $40 million in annual revenue would be used to make improvements throughout the heavily traveled I-95 corridor. VDOT says the interstate highway, which runs 178 miles through the state, will need $12.1 billion in work over the next 25 years, but only $2.5 billion will be available.
I-95, the major north-south route along the East Coast, carries 40 percent of the interstate traffic in Virginia.
