VT Summit to Discuss Preventing Bullying, Suicides

November 10, 2010

Experts plan to discuss ways to reduce school bullying, campus suicides and other violence at a two-day conference held by Virginia Tech's Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention.

Criminologists, psychologists and public health experts will get the chance to share their research and collaborate on violence-prevention strategies Friday and Saturday at the Blacksburg school. A featured speaker will be Dan Olweus, a Norwegian researcher who devised a bullying-prevention program that many U.S. and European schools have adopted.

Virginia Tech officials say it's important to examine critical factors that lead to the proliferation of violent acts, including the mass shooting that left 33 people dead on campus in 2007.
