Va. Ammunition Plant May Be Fined for Acid Leak

November 10, 2012

RADFORD, Va. (AP) - Virginia regulators say the Army and a defense contractor could be fined for a small amount of acid that leaked into the New River from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

According to a report released Friday by the state Department of Environmental Quality, acid from the July leak at the plant reached the river, but did no harm.

The Army and BAE Systems Inc. said the leak occurred while crews were trying to cool several overheated spent nitric acid tanks.

The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/TkE3XI) that regulators say plant personnel did not attain complete control and could not prevent some of the acid from reaching the river.

While crews responded acceptably, officials say they've begun a process that could lead to a fine from the state Water Control Board.
