Va. Arts Leaders Work to Restore Historic Theater

March 9, 2013

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Lynchburg arts officials are working to raise money to restore a historic downtown theater.

The Academy of Fine Arts says it needs to raise $16.6 million to restore its Academy of Music Theatre.

Officials announced the launch of the fundraising campaign Thursday. They were joined by downtown business and arts leaders to tout the economic and cultural impact the historic theater will have once it's reopened.

The News & Advance reports that the price tag for the restoration efforts totals $29 million, but a portion of that will be covered by anticipated tax credits.

The Academy of Music opened in 1905 and was a focal point for live entertainment in the city. Preservation efforts began in 2003.
