Va gets $1.5M in federal education funding

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Education is getting more than $1.5 million to improve personnel training systems to help children with disabilities.
The funding was announced Friday by the U.S. Department of Education as part of $24 million in grants to 22 states as part of the State Personnel Development Grants Program.
Officials say the money will help states reform and improve systems to prepare and develop employees in early intervention, education and transition services.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan says the quality of the education for children with disabilities is dependent on how well-equipped the workforce is in supporting them.
The grants will support projects aimed at recruiting and retaining special education teachers, mentoring, and training in how to improve student behavior in the classroom.
