Low morale and no pay increases within the past five years have contributed to an increase in teachers leaving North Carolina schools, and the Commonwealth is trying to lure them in.
Virginia teacher recruitment fairs are being advertised in North Carolina papers.
Teachers say it makes sense, because Virginia ranks 31st for average teacher pay, while North Carolina ranks 49th.
"They're poaching the best and the brightest of our talent, and right now, it's prime pickings because they know that we're unhappy," says Melissa Russell, a teacher in Johnston County, NC.
North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory says he's planning a pay increase for teachers in 2014, but many educators are skeptical.
