SALUDA, Va. (AP) - A chapter in Virginia's civil rights history is being remembered with a historical marker dedicated to a pioneer for equal rights.
The marker will be dedicated Saturday at the Middlesex County Courthouse in Saluda. It will pay homage to Irene Morgan, who refused to give up her seat on a Greyhound bus to a white passenger.
Morgan's arrest ultimately led to a lawsuit that was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1946, justices ruled it was unconstitutional to enforce segregation on interstate carriers.
The marker's dedication will be hosted by the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society and the local chapter of the NAACP. Speakers will also include members of Morgan's family.
Morgan was later known was Irene Morgan Kirkaldy. She died in 2007.
