Va. Minister Gets Suspended Sentence on Arson Plea

June 9, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Petersburg minister has received a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor arson charge.

A grand jury will consider a related felony charge.

Forty-one-year-old Olander D. Cuthrell was accused of setting his house and car in Chesterfield County on fire.

Prosecutor Laura Khawaja tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that Cuthrell entered his plea to the misdemeanor charge last week in Chesterfield County General District Court. Cuthrell was sentenced to 12 months in jail with the term suspended.

The misdemeanor charge stemmed from the car fire. The felony charge stemmed from another fire that damaged the house.

Khawaja says Cuthrell waived a preliminary hearing on the felony charge and it was certified to a grand jury.

Cuthrell is a minister of music at Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Petersburg.
