NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - An effort to set a world record for the largest pirate gathering has fallen short in Newport News.

WAVY-TV reports that while plenty of people showed up Saturday at the Mariners' Museum, there weren't enough of them dressed as pirates.

The Newport News home of the Civil War ironclad Monitor's turret was aiming to top the 2012 record of 14,231 set by the English town of Hastings.
