Va. Officer, Another Man Accused in Gun Buys

July 27, 2013

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A police officer in Rocky Mount and another man have been indicted on federal charges accusing them of acquiring guns through straw buyers to resell them at a profit.

Media reports identified the two as 25-year-old James Marion Slate and 57-year-old David Carson Haskins of Henry County.

Rocky Mount Police Chief David Cundiff said Slate has been a member of the force for about 14 months. Department policy calls for an officer accused of a felony to be suspended without pay.

The two men were named in an indictment returned by a grand jury in Roanoke on Thursday.

A telephone listing could not be found for Slate. A person who answered the phone Saturday at a listing for David Haskins said he did not live at that address.
